Whites Hill Farm, Sudeley Estate
Zesta Planning were pleased to work with Sudeley Castle Estate to prepare and submit an application for a high-quality contemporary dwelling at Whites Hill Cottage, Winchcombe.
The site comprised a derelict ruin of a former cottage. It is a constrained location within the Cotswold AONB and outside the Winchcombe settlement boundary. Our client sought the opportunity to develop a contemporary dwelling on the site to replace the derelict ruin of traditional design.
It was concluded that a traditional pastiche approach would be highly unlikely to replicate the character of the original and a contemporary approach would be more reflective of the 21st Century. The proposal supports high quality imaginative design by Fleming Architects Ltd and we made the case that the proposed development seeks to raise design standards within the Borough by encouraging high standards of sustainable construction and energy efficiency. The design, which incorporates the original ruin of the cottage, also ensures that the special landscape qualities of the AONB are protected by providing a more appropriate design solution and one which reflects today’s architecture. We are delighted to have secured planning permission for our client.

The design approach has sought to retain elements of the former cottage as a nod to the past, but blended this with a contemporary and sympathetic new dwelling, within this highly constrained area of the Cotswolds AONB and overlooking the nationally important Grade I Listed Sudeley Castle and its associated historic park and gardens.
